Wyrwane z kontekstu – Positioning: The Battle for Your Mind

The best approach to take in our overcommunicated society is the oversimplified message. In communication, as in architecture, less is more. You have to sharpen your message to cut into the mind. You have to jettison the ambiguities, simplify the message, and then simplify it some more if you want to make a long-lasting impression.

Wyrwane z kontekstu – Four Terrific and Four Terrible User Experiences

Plastic Packaging: Pretty much everything comes packed in plastic-wrapping these days. It often takes more time to open these plastic shells than the interest your child has in the contents.

My favorites are the ones that require a box-cutter, scissors, screwdriver and then band-aids.

Buxton Collection – Input/Output Devices

Bill Buxton, autor bardzo popularnej książki Sketching user experience jest również twórcą kapitalnej galerii urządzeń zapewniających interakcję pomiędzy człowiekiem a komputerem. Zbiór ten nosi nazwę Buxton Collection i potrafi wciągnąć na długie godziny. Polecam.

Wyrwane z kontekstu – Direct.gov 2010 and beyond

3. Reinventing government online publishing
Government publishes millions of pages on the Web, via hundreds of different websites. Most of these sites are still run as silos within departments. This fragmentation leads to significant duplication of functions and technology, and means the overall user experience is highly inconsistent.
I am convinced that a new approach to government online publishing is needed. A new central commissioning team should take responsibility for the overall user experience on the government web estate, and should commission content from departmental experts. This content should then be published to a single Government website with a consistently excellent user experience.

Direct.gov.uk to brytyjski, przyzwoicie wykonany odpowiednik naszego ePUAP, czyli serwisu określonego mianem rządowego one-stop shopu. Od czasu do czasu przyglądam się serwisom tego typu i publikacjom im poświęconym, zwłaszcza w krajach anglosaskich, które przodują we wdrażaniu koncepcji elektronicznego rządu (e-government).

Cytowany w artykule dokument Directgov 2010 and Beyond: Revolution Not Evolution to efekt pracy wykonanej w ramach znakomitej brytyjskiej incjatywy Race Online 2012, mającej na celu aktywizację obywateli online.

Lovely UI to świetny zbiór kilkuset inspirujących, ciekawych, balnalnych a czasem futurystycznych screenshotów aplikacji mobilnych. Strona zdecydowanie godna uwagi w pracy, podczas przerwy do kawy. Zdecydowanie polecam ;)

Wyrwane z kontekstu – 20 reasons why customer service is broken

Forcing customers to listen to crappy ‘have you tried using our website’ or other sales messages. I only ever pick up the telephone as an absolute last resort, and normally because I can’t do the thing I need to do via the website. If I could, I would. Playing these messages to a customer rather than picking up the telephone is entirely wrong-headed.

The Game of Graphic Design

Fatimah Kabba, projektantka z Nowego Jorku wpadła na pomysł nowatorskiego produktu – gry poświęconej projektowaniu, której celem ma być wciągniecię nietechnicznych klientów i kooperantów do wspólnego projektowania i planowania.

Solution: Create the game of graphic design. A game that allows everyone, not just designers or creatives, but your younger brother, your grandma who can’t click a computer mouse or your best friend who’s an economics major, to better understand and engage in the creative process.

Wyrwane z kontekstu – The Case Against User Interface Consistency

Figure 1b shows three cursor key configurations used to move the user’s screen position left, right, up, and down. Setting aside factors introduced by the size and shape of the keyboard and the locations of other keys, which is the best design?

The set of 24 interface experts unanimously chose the star (ii) as the design that they thought novices would rate most highly and about half of them also chose the star as the best design. The star has an obvious aesthetic appeal and it is consistent by analogy with directional indicators that appear on compasses, maps, and so forth.
But studies have shown that the inverted T (iii) is the most usable configuration and its use is spreading through the industry. Users require access to opposed pairs of directional keys (e.g. to compensate for overshoot), and with (ii), with the index finger on the cursor left key and the ring finger on cursor right, the middle finger can cover both the cursor up and cursor down keys most efficiently. This performance advantage may have first been discovered by the designers of fast-action computer games, who often map the directional movements to the i, j, k, and l keys, which form the inverted T pattern.

The appropriate design is based on an understanding of the cursor manipulation task and of the user-in this case, the physical characteristics of the hand. In both function key examples, designs consistent with external experience were tried, but ultimately were found to work against performance efficiency.
